5 December – World Soil Day
The Serbian Society of Soil Science marks 5 December, World Soil Day, every year, a date we also symbolically refer to as the birthday of soil. This day is dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of soil conservation as the foundation of food production, biodiversity and ecosystem stability.
Traditionally, members of the Society, associates and partners gather at different locations across Serbia through professional meetings, educational activities and public events, with the aim of bringing knowledge about soil closer to citizens, teachers, students and producers.
We invite all media to follow the activities organised on the occasion of World Soil Day and to join us in spreading the message about responsible care for soil, its protection and restoration.

The idea of marking World Soil Day originated from an international initiative of the professional community gathered around the Global Soil Partnership of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO. In 2013, the United Nations General Assembly officially designated 5 December as World Soil Day. The date was chosen in honour of the birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, who was a strong advocate of sustainable soil management and initiated numerous projects for the conservation of soil resources.
